Friday was a shocker – rain, sometimes heavy, and a strong Northerly wind. Practise sailing wasn’t popular!
Bill Bradley was at the club however, despite the conditions, to complete the weigh in and registration process for 20 keen competitors. This certainly took the pressure of the measuring on Saturday morning.
The forecast for Saturday was for fine weather and a mid-range A Rig SW breeze freshening in the afternoon to top of A Rig.
Competitors came from Nelson to Kerikeri and all places in between to give a high-quality fleet of 33 boats racing in two heats under the SHRS (Pre Assigned Heats) system.
The forecast breeze came in and remained consistent throughout the day.
The course was set on a slight diagonal down the pond with the top marks closer to the bank we were sailing from and the bottom marks out in the centre of the pond. This restricted the starboard lay-line so the decision was made to use an inside out gate at both the top and bottom of the course with the finish at the top gate after 2 laps to extend the final beat.
Sailing conditions do not get much better than this and we completed 11 races (22 Heats) to finish the day just before the 5.00pm deadline.
Sunday was the complete opposite direction with the forecast Northerly of 5 to 12 knots. We stayed with the same course format but in the opposite direction and completed another 2 qualifying rounds before going to Gold and Silver Finals. We completed 5 Finals Races (10 Heats) before calling it a day at around 2.40pm.
Another very successful Championship.
Congratulations to Ian Vickers 1st, Graham Roberts 2nd and Reuben Muir 3rd and to Graham Cross who won the Silver Fleet.
Thanks to all competitors who really made this an enjoyable event.
Thanks also to Ian Westlake (boatman, computer genius and assistant RO), Bill Bradley (Measurer), Alan Vickers & John Porter (Result takers), Neil Forrester who stepped in for a couple of boat rescues, and a big thank you to our umpires John Rountree and Wayne Boburgwho ensured a smooth-running regatta enjoyed by all.
I conclude with my thanks to Roy Granich who assisted with posting live updates on the ANZAM SHRS website for all interested followers to enjoy.
The use of Roy’s enhancement to the SHRS system to enable Random Pre-Assignment for the Qualifying Heats meant that everyone knew (or should have known!) which heats they were going to be sailing in and this sped up the turnaround between races.
