Race Officer’s Report: 2025 DF 95 South Island Champs.

The event was well supported, with a strong contingent from Cromwell, Pegasus, Nelson and,no other than the Rocket Man, Murray McDonnell from Auckland.

Sailors arrived Friday afternoon for registration and a chance to test the water. A light northerly prevailed, allowing for testing and fine tuning.

Saturday morning started with little and fickle wind, so racing was delayed until 12.00pm, finally getting under way at 1300hrs. There was a steady northerly providing excellent close sailing, finishing at 1700hrs. There were 20 races completed, with a close leader board.

After sailing, pizza and a beer or wine were enjoyed in the Marquee setting – a very convivial atmosphere for the regatta.

Sunday morning dawned with once again no wind; racing was delayed starting at 1230hrs,with a similar breeze to Saturday. Close racing was enjoyed with the leader board changing regularly; the trophy winner was not decided until the last race. After 4 races, sailing finished at 1500hrs. We had a total of 24 races for the series. The event was won by 1.8 points.

The Nelson Radio Sailing Club ran a happy, well managed event. Trained observers were provided; they were respected by the sailors, who in turn did their penalties when necessary, and excellent sportsmanship prevailed.

It was pleasing to see Alexa Bell from Cromwell finishing in 12th place (her first regatta, I think). It would be nice to see more Ladies taking up the sport. The DF95 is an ideal affordable option for them.

While I was the RO for this event, I am also the Commodore of the Nelson Radio Sailing Club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who presented the venue, assisted as Observers, recorded the finishing times, provided the results, manned the rescue boat, made cups of tea and kept the beer cold; plus many other behind the scenes support and,of course, our own Bob Spearman, 95 years young, who presented the trophy and medals. Hesails a V11, is on a 60 handicap, scratch being 70. Beat that!

Yes, it was FUN.
John Levy.
