During the weekend of November 18th/19th The Cromwell Radio Yacht Squadron held the Otago DF95 championship. The club championship was held at the same time.
Pre-regatta entries came in at 20 yachts from around the Motu. Unfortunately, there were some late withdrawals but we did still have a fleet of 15 yachts sailing for the weekend. This included 9 local yachts and 6 visitors. The decision was made to run one fleet of 15 yachts. Offset top mark as a separator and gate at the bottom.
Races were run in sets of three with a short break between each set. A single test race was run first each morning to check rig set ups and course layout.
Saturday had a light Northerly breeze in the 5/7 knot range. But it held true and no course changes were needed. Some tight but fair racing especially around the top mark that saw a lot of competitors diving in on port, 13 races were completed.
Sunday saw a 180-degree wind change with a steady 5/8 knot breeze. The course set for racing made it much easier to see the top mark. Around lunchtime the wind got up and it was borderline B-rigs. Most chose to stay with the A-rigs until a B-rig change saw that competitor sail through the fleet for a win. At that point time was given for others to change down. After 11 races and a total of 24 completed over the weekend.
Final results are:
Otago Chapionship:
1st: Jamie White
2nd Greg Thompson
3rd John
This was the first time CRYS had run a RC regatta at this venue. We had the Lake Dunstan Boat Club open that become the set-up area for all the yachts. On Saturday afternoon some local pies supplied by Sangas Pies were handed out to competitors and volunteers. This was followed up with some cool refreshing beverages.
