Geoff Smale Memorial Regatta 25/1/2023 RO’s Report
16 boats entered. A fine day with little cloud and a good easterly breeze suitable for B rigs
A variation for setting the course was trialled. It consisted of the following:
– A normal start line.
– The two windward marks were treated as a gate. Boats approached from outside of either
mark then passed downwind through the inside of the gate. The leeward gate was
conventional inside to outside of either mark.
Two laps, finishing at the start line
This course turned out to be remarkable success with less contacts at the top mark
The entries were divided into 3 fleets: red, black & blue. A draw determined which fleet each
skipper was in, with a redraw at lunchtime to mix up the groups.
21 races sailed all told, with each boat doing 14 races with 2 drops.
Each fleet sailed against the other two in rotation, with 2 fleets on the water at one time while the
other fleet had a break on shore. This allowed for more races to be completed much more quickly
Very few boats were called OCS and penalties were completed with very few calls needed
From the RO my thanks to my team from the start/finish – Russell Green & George Tui, along with
Trevor Shoebridge, & Bob Senior, for the BBQ and food
From the RO’s perspective this regatta was one of the more pleasurable that I have run with good
manners and good friendly banter.
On another note it was pleasing to see the performance young Josh Bull who has only been sailing
IOMs for 3 months. He is young competitor worth keeping an eye on
Lastly the WEED is still a problem, but the top 4 finishers were quite consistent and you have 12
months to forget about the weed. We hope to see you back next year
Cheers and good sailing Ted Miller, RO
