Welcome to sunny Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty, which is an ideal spot for relaxation on its many beautiful beaches, busy and bountiful harbour and surrounding scenic forests and walkways.
If you are a competitive type and have a good interest or understanding of yachting but not ready for all the wet and wild stuff that comes with the big boats then we are the sport for you.
The Lakes area at the South-western area of Tauranga is the site of the Tauranga Radio Sailing Club which boasts a large man made lake that has allowed for a plethora of waterborne sports from RC Sailing to Dragon Boats.
Developed around 2009 the club relocated to make use of these facilities and immediately took upon them selves the running of the 2010 IOM New Zealand National Championships, and again in 2014 where there was some very top class sailing with 45 sailors and a multitude of spectators and officials.
The TgaRSC now boasts a membership of over 40 active sailors with most finding time to come out to the Lake more than once per week.
We have casual sailing on Mondays and Wednesdays with our main racing day being Saturday, starting at 1pm Mon and Wed and an 11am start on Saturdays. Sailing continues through until approximately 4pm but this will vary depending on conditions on the day.
Results are normally posted within 24 hours and normally display sail number and photos of the day.
The venue has a fair sized jetty that has a reasonable amount of room to launch and retrieve the boats but if you need to work on them it is recommended to move back to the cradle area near the walking track.
The walking track goes completely around the lake allowing for good visibility of the course and allows for good access, even for one of our members who is in a powered wheelchair.
The most popular class in Tauranga is the IOM (International One Metre) but we also have events for other classes including the Mini40, Marblehead, and Electrons.
Our Sanctioned Race Calendar includes the BoP IOM Champs sailed in the latter third of the year and the VTNZ All Classes Regatta Normally held in January, with other events included as required on request.
We have an active arm of the club in the Katikati / Waihi Area (Lake Gilmore) and a new arm starting in the Rotorua region (Lake Okaraki). We are also looking at developing other venues in the Bay of Plenty area to expand the sport.
