The EC12 National Championship 2025 was held at Best Island, Nelson on 8th and 9th March 2025. In all, eight boats entered. Christchurch, Nelson and Kapiti Clubs were represented.
Day 1 started on the back of the southerly that had come up the country and dawned a cool, grey day. The breeze was flukey from the west south west with huge swings making it difficult to set a fair course. With many postponements and course changes the breeze finally settled into a northerly and racing was much fairer. As the day progressed the fleet was depleted to four boats with 13 races completed.
Day 2 dawned bright and sunny and the final few races were sailed in a light southerly which eventually swung to our northerly sea breeze. A delightful breeze to sail in albeit a bit shifty. Twenty seven races were sailed in total.
Firstly I would like to say I enjoyed being amongst gentlemanly sailors. Penalties were taken and there was very little verbosity.
Congratulations to Chris Koskela who won the regatta comprehensivey sailing Bruce Edgar’s 132 “Lola”. Chris Harmer (#110) was placed second with Alan Dunn (#95) third. Well done to these sailors and to all the participants.
As a Race Officer it can be mind bending setting a course and making sure there is minimal bias. While social sailing makes allowances for boats nudging each other and buoy bumping, the Rules must be followed in regattas. I would urge all social sailors to follow and practice the rules especially if they wish to compete in competitions as an RO cannot overlook such infringements.
An overall very enjoyable regatta.
