Congrats to Kapiti local Mike Calkoen followed by Graeme Perry 2nd and Chris Harmer 3rd.
A mixed bag of weather for the National Champs. Saturday morning gave us a shifty southwesterly which tested the Race Officer’s course setting skills. Saturday afternoon settled in to a steadier southerly breeze giving us some of the best racing conditions for the weekend. This morning we arrived to fine the expected northeasterly coming through at a steady 10-12kts, but as the day progressed the wind increased and became progressive more unstable. Eventually we pulled the pin midway through the afternoon and called it a day.
We got 19 races away on a course that extended the full length of the lake’s western shoreline, so a lot of racing happened over the two days. Mike Calkoen sailed a brilliant second day to overtake Chris Harmer (the overnight leader) and carry home the 2022 DF65 National Champion gold medal
