EC12 South Island Championships 4 September 2022 Report
This event had 7 entries, all from Christchurch, and was hosted and sailed at the Christchurch Model
Yacht Club in Hagley Park. The day started off with a warm sunny light NE wind for the first 2 heats,
then shifted around to a fresh NW shifty wind which required a complete course change, 2 more
heats were sailed on this course but the wind was shifting further west so racing was stopped for
lunch break. During this break the wind direction settled into a westerly so another course change
was made. Fortunately, the wind direction remained constant for the rest of the event as far as the
course went, but the strong gusts and unstable wind made the sailing a very trying regatta. During
lunch break No.94 changed to a B rig but none of the other boats did.
With the fresh wind and final course change another lap was added to make the course 3 triangles
which took the first boat approximately 13-14 minutes to complete. The whole fleet were fairly close
all day so no time limits were needed. The gusty winds caused numerous broaches and nosedives
but rarely did 94’s B rig succumb out of control, also the attrition of gear failure was mounting with 2
boats having to withdraw and several boats time requests for repairs.
Overall, the weather was warm and sunny but the majority of sailing conditions were very tough and
the sailors were pleased when the regatta finished and the sausage sizzle was cooked by Ron Bedyn.
The principal race officer was Tom Arthur assisted by Peter Fisher and Ron Bedyn.
