Race Officers report on the South Island DF 65 Champs at Best Island 14-15 May
We decided to have a 1200 hrs start as Nelson doesn’t have a lot of wind in autumn and so it turned
out to be.
A small fleet of 11 gathered on the start line with 9 Nelson sailors and 2 from Kapiti.
The first couple of races were held in a light SW then the wind slowly swung to the north and
remained very light.
9 more races were completed in this light wind until it died out at 1445 hrs, and we called it a day.
Mike and Graham from Kapiti showed the way and were on top of the leader board on day one with
Peter Jensen from Nelson third.
Sunday dawned with low cloud and no wind with not a lot of prospects for a full day’s sailing.
We managed one race into a very light southwest the wind died just as the rain set in so at 1345 hrs,
we called the racing off after a total of 12 races for the regatta.
After 12 races Mike Calkoen was the winner followed by Graham Perry and Peter Jensen from
Nelson.
Despite the challenging conditions the Nelson sailors all learned from racing with the guns from
Kapiti and look forward to more regattas.
