DF95 North Islands Report and Results

DAY ONE
We all arrived at Gulf Harbour on Saturday to find the predicted Easterly was delivering wind from all points of the compass. With 17 entries we opted for social racing every 30 minutes or so. At 2.00pm we had a meeting with the skippers, and it was decided that the day was over after a day long postponement wait for salable breeze.
DAY TWO
The day started with a light NE which showed promise. By 9.30am it had filled in, so we started racing early, and got two races in by 10.00am. We got out to race 5 before the wind lightened off, before filling in stronger. We changed from using a top and spreader mark to a gate at the top. If created a lot more opportunity on the first run, and spread the fleet fairly evenly across the course creating a lot more work for Harold at the bottom gate, but less for Mike at the top gate. I would use this set up again in the future.
In total we got through 18 races, and at race 15 the top three boats were separated by two points. Grant Lane got first, Graham Clough was second, and Kark Stachel was third, but by winning the last race Karl won the Rough Red bottle of wine.
The behaviour was awesome, the racing was incredibly quite, with polite calls for penalties and none if the often heard at regattas shouting and arguing. Well done sailors!
I would like to thank Peter Strathdee, Mike McLaughlin, Harold Bennet and Jan Perry for their assistance in running the event. Without volunteers like these guys, events don’t happen.
