2022 EC12 Nationals – Final Result

Race Officers Report for EC12 Nationals
Hi All,
A big congratulations to Chris Harmer on his win in the 2022 EC12 Nationals hosted this weekend by KRYC and held at Awatea. Chris was joined on the podium by Brian Hogg (2nd) and Chris Hargreaves (3rd), both of whom kept Chris honest, but never really looked like getting between Chris and the gold medal.
The fleet enjoyed a great day of racing yesterday with light and reasonably steady northerly breezes. Magic EC12 conditions with the contest getting 15 races away.
A very different day today with the forecast southerly not really delivering as hoped for. Instead we experienced huge oscillations from Southwest to East, occasionally quite violent. We got only five races away before lunch then took a break hoping that things would settle down for the afternoon. Unfortunately it was not to be and with only one afternoon race completed the wind switched to the East and ratcheted up several notches in strength. A new course was set for the easterly and racing restarted, but half way around the track with every boat blown flat, that race was abandoned in the interest of protecting boats and gear. After a quick conference with the skippers the decision was made to abandon racing for the rest of the afternoon and retire to the refreshments.
This was a very cool weekend of sailing with the EC12’s really showing off Awatea as a racing venues. Great to see a few club members come down to watch the racing and lot of interest shown by passers by. Many thanks to those members of the club who assisted with the running of the event and contributing to the two days going so smoothly.
cheers
Graeme Perry
