Race Officer’s Report – 2025 Waikato IOM Championships

We had 24 starters on Saturday morning as Mr Pryde had left his escape from New Plymouth too late, and Mother Nature trapped him there.

We decided to run one big fleet of 24 boats to give the sailors some practice at sailing in a fleet bigger than the 10 to 14 we have become accustomed to of late. Three general recalls later, and around the ends in force we got Race One underway in a shifty 5 knot Northish breeze. The sailors kept our observers Mark and Colin Frankham busy, a lot of people struggling with the port tack approach at the top mark. We got through 8 races, then a Southerly change arrived early, so I reversed the course whole therein came down, moved the start/finish line, and gunned off two more races before calling it a day after 10 races. 

The Southerly was there again Sunday morning, still a little shifty, but very sailable. Once again top mark rounding was perilous, and even when the marks were much closer, still alluded many sailors. We had nice 5 to 8 knot breeze most of the day and finish racing at 2.15pm after completing 21 races over two days. Congratulations to Earl Williams on his clear win, and Graham Roberts for a well sailed 2nd, Richard Guy managed to overtake Grant Nixon in the final four races to clinch 3rd by a slim margin.

Many thanks to Wendy for doing an excellent job of recording the finish times and updating AFleet and running the results. Top effort!!! Also thanks to Keona for assisting on day one, you did a great job maintaining the fleet board.

It was another really successful Waikato Championships, and the Waikato Club dud themselves proud with a top event.

I know after 21 races there will be some tired sailors, but for those heading to the Oceania Champs, this weekend will have been good practice for sailing on a more congested racecourse with 20+ other sailors.

I am not sure of the final count, but congrats to Nigel Sibun for averaging over 1 penalty per race for the weekend!!@
