It is with heavy hearts that we learnt of the passing of Ian Vickers, an absolute stalwart of Radio Sailing in New Zealand, particularly within the IOM class.
In all aspects of the sport, Ian was known for precision, innovation, expertise, and most of all simply being a gentleman both on and off the water.
Apart from design and construction expertise, Ian’s sailing placed him on the podium of numerous international competitions.
Having earned their place around the world in fleets on all continents, the Vickers series of IOM designs will live on as part of Ian’s legacy.
Within New Zealand we can attribute this series of “local” designs for a significant part of the rapid growth in both the IOM class and the overall sport in recent years.
We will remember Ian’s massive contribution to the sport we all love.
