2026 North Island Champs

Kai Iwi Lakes 20^th – 22^nd March 2026

Conditions for the weekend really turned it on for the 45 entrants in the regatta.

Typical of autumn lake sailing the wind took some time to fill in. The forecasting was accurate, so while it is tempting to chase the early morning wind when setting a course, and bearing in mind that Ian Vickers was doing that job for us as well as defending his title, I was confident it was better to wait and race in good conditions rather than chase the breeze around the lake.

Both mornings started on a NW course then we moved to the other side of the launching area where we raced in wind from the southerly quarter. There were enough shifts to challenge skipper’s concentration but particularly in slightly stronger wind (a couple of nose dives) on Sunday afternoon the conditions were perfect. To top that off, plenty of sunshine and crystal-clear water.

The results tell the story of the regatta. We sailed seven races – 21 heats, and a rum race (won by Sean) on Saturday finishing around 5.30pm. We then moved to the club house for social time and an excellent meal cooked by Coughy and helpers. In honour of the Australian skippers, our Dave Larsen at very short notice composed a regatta song with three different versions – amazing talent.

Speaking of our Australian friends we really appreciate the effort you made to come across for a two-day regatta. The usual suspects who regularly turn up – Shaun the social secretary and Doug the social secretary’s assistant. This time they brought a responsible adult with them, thanks Glenn.

While I could plagiarize it and take the credit, on radiosailing.org.au there is an excellent race report. Thank you for your kind and positive comments.

NSRYS worked hard to live up to the standard set by Team Nelson at the Oceania.Early arrival, gazebos up, camp trailer (Cloughy again), computer running etc, etc…Great work by the NSRYS committee, overseen by their Commodore Peter McCully who sweated blood and lost sleep making it all happen.

The list of honours extends to our International Umpires John and Wayne, our recorders Tony, Viv and Lynn, the South Island skippers, and all the others (you know who you are…) who made it happen.
