With 25 entries, the Geoff Smale Memorial Regatta at The Quarry was shaping up to be an event to be contested.
Weather forecast was predicting rain with an ENE wind blowing up to 25 knots. Racing started at 1000hrs in overcast conditions with the two fleets sailing in middle of A rig wind range. The wind soon increased to top of A, bottom of B and by race 3, most boats had changed down to B.
Racing then became exciting with close racing in the windier conditions by both fleets for race 4. A short break was had while the race team sorted the fleets into final Gold and Silver.
Five Gold and Silver fleet races were completed with the overall winner to be decided in the last race by a slim points margin between 1st and 2nd.
The eventual winner sailed away to win after the lead boat tried some bush wacking on the sides of the course on the final leg.
By now, the rain had settled in for the day, the sailors where happy to call it a day and all enjoyed a special sausage combo put on by the BBQ team.
Thank you to all sailors, observers, assistants and chefs who helped to make this a memorable event. Tony Hay – Race Officer
